Just like other brewers, Duvel Moortgat has to put a perishable date and batchcode on its products. Except for Vedett, at its production site in Puurs Duvel Moortgat has been using Mundi Technology's MundiScan for all its beers. The MundiScan is a fast writing-laser with a high capacity. "Since the integration of this writing laser into the Krones Topmatic labelling machine the quality and reliability of the encoding on the bottles has greatly improved", says maintenance manager Jo van Roy.
"Before deciding to work with Mundi Technology we explored the market. Our practical experiences prove that we made the best choice." In the past Duvel Moortgat used a laser from a Belgian supplier for this application. This laser had to be replaced. The quality of the print, as well as the service, fell short of our requirements. Moreover, it was an expensive challenge to obtain spare parts. "When our encoding solution stops working we're into serious trouble", says Van Roy. "No product may leave our company without a perishable date and batch code. If we can't encode, we have to work with pre-printed labels. This is cumbersome. It disrupts the production and the traceability.
Since we've started using Mundi's new laser we have never had to use this emergency measure. It is clear that we've made improvements in the field of traceability."
A comparison of the 'old' code with the clear, contrasting 'new' lasercode shows the difference in readability.
From the first contact with Mundi Technology Duvel Moortgat realised that the Dutch lasercoding specialist was the right partner. Van Roy: "You notice immediately that the employees are at the same wavelength. Their solutions and samples are convincing. They master their interfacing techniques. These people understand the brewing sector and the commonly used machines.
They have similar installations on Krones machines at other breweries, which we could visit. Their approach fosters confidence and leads to a successful project."
